Galicia’s forests need their wild ponies

The GrazeLIFE project, in which the BIOCOST group participates, presented its main results to the European Commission on 9 December. During this event, the researcher Jaime Fagúndez had the opportunity to highlight the important role played by wild ponies in the biodiversity and integrity of the Galician forests, as we know them.

In the last 50 years the population of these animals has been compromised, reducing to less than half. According to the researcher, one of the main causes could be the loss of natural habitats, which have been converted to forest use of lesser ecological value.

Among the benefits of keeping wild ponies in the bush is the reduction of fires, a problem of particular relevance in Galicia.
