Environmental Change Research Group

In the Environmental Change Research Group (GRICA) we study the ecological and climatic variability of the Earth system on a geological time scale using an interdisciplinary approach.

Our research focuses on the analysis of the continental sedimentary record using different sedimentary, geochemical and palaeontological indicators.

This research aims to understand present-day environmental changes that require a temporal perspective that transcends the available instrumental records, such as current climate change and its consequences.

Research Line 1 - Quaternary Palaeoecology and Palaeoclimatology

In this line of research we study the climatic variability of the last hundreds of thousands of years and its repercussions on the dynamics of continental aquatic ecosystems. We also investigate the impact exerted by man on these systems throughout their history. Of special interest is the knowledge of extreme climatic events, their future projections and their consequences on the management of water resources, such as eutrophication phenomena, algal blooms, changes in trophic structure or the consequences of the introduction of invasive species.

Our group carries out qualitative and quantitative palaeoenvironmental reconstructions using a multi-indicator approach (geochemical and micropalaeontological analysis, instrumental data series analysis, statistical modelling, chronostratigraphy, etc.).

The line covers the study of lakes and wetlands in the North Atlantic and South Pacific geoclimatic regions.
