This research group studies a variety of basic and applied aspects of the biology of marine and coastal organisms. From the perspective of applied science, the research group has developed, above all, evaluation methods, sustainable management and the growth of different species of marine macroalgae of industrial interest. Similarly, it develops and applies environmental biomonitoring techniques in the marine setting through the use of invertebrates and bentonic macroalgae. This group maintains regular contact with the regional and central governments for consultancy tasks on aspects related with (i) the application of marine agronomics to the techniques of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) and (ii) the presence of allochthonous marine species on the Galician coast. In the same way, there has been a relationship of more than five years with the Porto Muiños company and, more recently, with the Algafrés and Isidro de la Cal companies to develop a pilot experience with integrated multi-trophic aquaculture in the estuary of Ría de Ares-Betanzos as part of a future European project within the Horizon 2020 programme.
The group’s skill set can be summed up as:
1) Applied research:
2) Basic research:
