This year, the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) has awarded a series of Research Grants for cancer projects at its provincial headquarters. Of the 550,000 euros earmarked for Galicia, almost 350,000 will be invested i n the province of A Coruña.
Among the six recipients of these grants, the student Esther Calviño has received 3,400 euros with which she will carry out her undergraduate work in the EXPRELA group. In her project she will analyse the effects of the over-expression of HMGB proteins in prostate cancer cell cultures.
The Lab AECC project, directed by José M. Castro Tubío from CIMUS, has received the largest amount of funding (300,000 euros) in this call for proposals. The other 4 grants are distributed as follows: 20,000 euros for José Martínez Costas (Molecular Virology Group at CIQUS), 7,000 euros for Paloma Sosa (Oncology at CHUS), and other 2 grants of 3,400 euros for undergraduate students María Crugeiras and María Arias (CIMUS).
The awards ceremony took place yesterday, at the headquarters of the Medical Association of the Province of A Coruña, in a ceremony presided over by Carlos Lamora, vice-president of the AECC Provincial Board of A Coruña, and was attended by all the winners.
